Workplace : Suburbia

The zero-commute office is the future of workspaces. Living and working within a minimal area is supported by technology that allows for a dislocated workforce and reduces climate destroying emissions caused by commuting. This enormous and evolving spatial reconfiguration of workspaces challenges the need for traditional offices in urban and exurban conditions. The attention now turns to the suburban territory. In rethinking the workspaces of the future, it is not so much redefining the office tradition, but rather where it is located.

This system of ad hoc and scalable buildings I am proposing allow for typologies to be deployed based on need and desire. These suburban offices become customizable and adaptable, allowing materiality, size, transparency, and accessibility to fit the specific needs of the workspace desired.

50 years in the future the suburban landscape will drastically change. With the integration of shared driverless cars, the once car dependent streets of the suburbs will be replaced by new territory for office space. Cars will no longer be a fixture of the suburban identity. Instead, curb side parking spaces and the median dividing the street and sidewalk become opportune land for workspaces. The suburban street is now a productive workspace and community.

Suburban neighborhoods will take on a new identity and purpose in the city. Lower density office space, designed for the human scale, will allow for a more intimate office landscape which prioritizes community. The future of the workspace is suburban.
